Rug Cleaning by Material
Wool Rug Cleaning
Wahi Rugs & Carpet provides professional hand-wash cleaning for wool area rugs, the most common material in fine hand-knotted rugs. Wool's natural resilience makes it well-suited to controlled immersion cleaning, when done correctly.
The Most Common Rug Fiber
Why Wool Handles Cleaning Well
Wool is naturally soil-resistant, springs back from crushing, and holds dye beautifully — qualities that make it the most widely used fiber in hand-knotted rugs, and also why it generally tolerates hand-wash immersion cleaning well.
Our Wool Cleaning Process
We inspect fiber type, dye stability, and existing wear before washing. Wool rugs are hand-washed using controlled water temperature to avoid felting, then dried under monitored conditions to prevent shrinkage or mildew.
What to Avoid
Steam cleaners and high-heat drying are the biggest risks to a wool rug — both can felt the fibers together and cause shrinkage that can't be reversed. Rental carpet cleaners built for synthetic wall-to-wall carpet are not designed for wool area rugs.
Between professional cleanings, our rug maintenance basics guide covers vacuuming and rotation habits that keep wool rugs looking their best.

Wool Rug Cleaning FAQ
How often should a wool rug be professionally cleaned?+
Most wool rugs benefit from professional hand-wash cleaning every 12 to 18 months. Homes with pets or heavy foot traffic often need it closer to the 12-month mark.
Why is wool generally safe for hand-wash immersion cleaning?+
Wool is a naturally resilient fiber that holds up well to controlled hand-wash immersion, which is why most fine hand-knotted rugs are made from it. The key is controlling water temperature and drying to avoid felting or shrinkage.
Can I steam clean my wool rug at home instead?+
We don't recommend it. Steam cleaners use high heat that can felt wool fibers together and shrink the rug, along with too much moisture for the backing to dry properly on its own.
Does wool attract moths during storage?+
Yes, wool is a common target for moth damage, especially in storage. Clean wool rugs thoroughly before long-term storage, since moths are drawn to soil and skin oils as much as the fiber itself.
Do you offer pickup for wool rug cleaning across Hampton Roads?+
Yes, free pickup and delivery throughout Hampton Roads. See our service area pages for city-specific details.
