Rug Care Fundamentals
How to Store a Rug Properly
Storing a rug the wrong way is one of the most common causes of damage we see — moth infestations, permanent creases, and musty odor are almost always preventable. Here's how to store a rug correctly, and why cleaning first matters more than anything else.
Prevention Over Repair
Storage Mistakes We See Most Often
Most storage-related rug damage is entirely preventable. The rugs that come to us with moth damage, musty odor, or permanent creasing almost always share the same root causes — being stored dirty, folded instead of rolled, or in a damp, uncontrolled space.
Clean First, Always
This is the single most important step. Soil, skin oils, and any lingering odor in an unwashed rug attract moths and other pests, and can set permanently into the fibers the longer they sit. A thoroughly cleaned rug is far less likely to develop problems in storage.
Roll, Don't Fold
Folding a rug creates creases in the foundation that can become permanent over time, particularly in wool and silk. Roll the rug instead, ideally with the pile facing inward.
Wrap & Store in a Stable Environment
Wrap in breathable fabric rather than plastic, which can trap moisture and encourage mildew. Store in a cool, dry, climate-stable space — damp basements and hot, humid attics are common causes of musty odor and mildew in stored rugs.

Rug Storage FAQ
Should I clean my rug before storing it long-term?+
Yes, always. Soil, oils, and any residual odor left in a rug can attract moths and other pests during storage, and stains left untreated can set permanently over time. Cleaning first is the single most important step.
Should I roll or fold a rug for storage?+
Roll it, never fold it. Folding creates permanent creases in the foundation over time, especially in wool and silk rugs. Roll with the pile facing inward to help protect the surface.
What's the best way to protect a stored rug from moths?+
A clean rug is the first line of defense, since moths are drawn to soil and skin oils as much as the wool itself. Wrapping in breathable fabric (not plastic, which can trap moisture) and checking periodically also helps.
Is it safe to store a rug in a basement or attic?+
Only if the space is climate-controlled and dry. Damp basements and humid attics are common causes of mildew and musty odor in stored rugs. A cool, dry, stable environment is best.
How long can a rug safely stay in storage?+
Properly cleaned and stored rugs can generally last in storage for years without issue, though we recommend periodic checks and re-cleaning before returning a rug to regular use after extended storage.
