Persian rugs represent centuries of weaving tradition from specific regions of Iran, each with distinct patterns, knot densities, and dye practices. Cleaning a genuine Persian rug well means understanding those differences, not treating every rug the same.
Natural Dyes Require Extra Care
Many finer and older Persian rugs use vegetable-based, natural dyes rather than synthetic ones. These dyes can be more prone to bleeding if exposed to the wrong water temperature, pH, or cleaning agent. We test dye stability on an inconspicuous area before committing to a full wash.
Our Process
Every Persian rug that comes through our Norfolk facility is inspected for region of origin (where identifiable), wool or silk content, dye type, and existing condition before we decide on a cleaning approach. This isn't a formality — it's the difference between a rug that comes out vibrant and one that's damaged.

Persian rugs are woven specifically in Iran, in distinct regional styles — Tabriz, Isfahan, Qum, Kashan, and others — each with its own knot density, wool quality, and design tradition. “Oriental” is the broader category; “Persian” refers specifically to this origin.
Why do Persian rugs need special cleaning care?+
Many Persian rugs use natural, vegetable-based dyes that can be more sensitive to water temperature and cleaning agents than synthetic dyes. We test for dye stability before washing to avoid bleeding or color migration.
How do I know if my rug is a genuine hand-knotted Persian rug?+
