One Term, Many Traditions
What “Oriental Rug” Actually Means
“Oriental rug” covers an enormous range of weaving traditions — Persian rugs from Iran, Turkish rugs from Anatolia, tribal rugs from the Caucasus, and rugs from Central Asia and China. Each tradition uses different wool, dyes, and knotting styles, which is exactly why a one-size-fits-all cleaning approach doesn't work.
Why Regional Differences Matter for Cleaning
Natural dyes common in older or more traditional Oriental rugs can be sensitive to water temperature and pH. Wool quality and density vary by region, affecting how a rug absorbs and releases moisture during washing. We inspect origin, material, and dye stability before deciding on a cleaning approach — not after.
Our Process
Every Oriental rug is inspected for fiber type, dye stability, and existing wear before any water touches it. We hand-wash using methods appropriate to that specific rug, not a generic cycle.

Oriental Rug Cleaning FAQ
What counts as an “Oriental rug”?+
“Oriental rug” is a broad term for hand-knotted rugs woven in a region stretching from Turkey through the Caucasus, Persia (Iran), Central Asia, and China. It describes origin and weaving tradition, not a specific material or pattern.
Do all Oriental rugs get cleaned the same way?+
No. Regional weaving traditions differ in fiber, dye type, and knot density, so we inspect each rug individually rather than applying one blanket process to every Oriental rug that comes through our door.
How can I tell if my Oriental rug is hand-knotted or machine-made?+
Flip a corner over — a hand-knotted rug shows the same pattern on the back as the front, with small natural irregularities in the knots. Our full construction guide covers every telltale sign.
Is it safe to clean an Oriental rug at home?+
For anything beyond light surface dust, we don't recommend it. Natural dyes common in Oriental rugs can bleed with the wrong water temperature or detergent, and improper drying can cause mildew in the foundation.
Do you offer pickup for Oriental rug cleaning across Hampton Roads?+
Yes, we offer free pickup and delivery throughout Hampton Roads. See our service area pages for details specific to your city.
