Rug Cleaning by Age
Antique Rug Cleaning
Wahi Rugs & Carpet provides careful, conservation-minded cleaning for antique and heirloom rugs, generally 80 to 100+ years old. We assess condition before every wash — not after — to protect fragile foundations and irreplaceable pieces.
Assess First, Clean Second
Careful Cleaning for Irreplaceable Rugs
An antique rug isn't just old — it's often irreplaceable, whether for its craftsmanship, its history, or its place in a family. Cleaning it the wrong way can cause damage that's difficult or impossible to reverse, which is why we never treat an antique rug like a routine wash.
What We Check Before Cleaning
Before any water touches an antique rug, we assess the foundation for fragility, test dye stability across the rug's colors, and inspect fringe and edges for existing wear. This tells us whether standard hand-wash cleaning is appropriate or whether a more limited, gentler approach is needed.
Restoration Alongside Cleaning
Many antique rugs need repair as much as cleaning — worn fringe, loose edges, or moth damage that's developed over decades. We can address both in the same visit rather than sending you elsewhere. See our repair and restoration page for what's typically fixable.
Not sure of your antique rug's value or origin? Our appraisal service can help, particularly useful for insurance or estate purposes.

Antique Rug Cleaning FAQ
How is antique rug cleaning different from cleaning a newer rug?+
Antique rugs — generally 80 to 100+ years old — often have more fragile foundations, natural dyes prone to bleeding, and existing wear that needs to be accounted for before submerging the rug in water. We assess condition first, every time.
Is it risky to clean a very old or fragile rug?+
It can be, if done incorrectly. That's why we inspect the foundation, fringe, and dye stability before deciding whether standard hand-wash cleaning is appropriate or whether a gentler, more limited approach is needed.
Should I get my antique rug appraised before cleaning?+
Many customers prefer to, especially for rugs of unknown or uncertain value. Appraisal first can also inform how we approach cleaning. See our rug appraisal service for details.
Can damaged antique rugs still be cleaned safely?+
In most cases, yes, though we'll flag any concerns during inspection first. If repair is also needed, we can address that alongside cleaning — see our repair and restoration page.
Do you offer pickup for antique rugs across Hampton Roads?+
Yes, and given the delicate nature of many antique pieces, our team handles pickup and transport carefully rather than having you roll and load a fragile rug yourself. See our service area pages for details.
