Fringe Repair: What to Expect

Fringe is often the first part of a rug to show wear, and also one of the most misunderstood — many people assume it's purely decorative, when on most hand-knotted rugs it's actually the visible continuation of the foundation's warp threads.

Why Fringe Wears Out

Foot traffic, vacuum beater bars, and pets are the most common causes of fringe wear. Fringe along a high-traffic walkway edge typically wears faster than fringe along a less-used side of the rug.

Partial Repair vs. Full Re-Fringing

Minor, localized wear can often be repaired in just the affected section, matching the surrounding fringe as closely as possible. More extensive wear across the whole edge usually calls for full re-fringing so the finished look stays consistent across the entire rug.

Simple Ways to Slow Fringe Wear

Avoid running a vacuum's beater bar directly over the fringe — a gentle pass or hand-cleaning the fringe area is safer. Rotating your rug periodically also helps distribute wear more evenly instead of concentrating it on one edge.
